If you are a fan of roses and books you will definitely love the Festival of Sant Jordi. The people in Catalonia celebrate the day of their patron saint with a curious tradition, you are not gonna miss it!

The uniqueness of Sant Jordi Day

Traditionally, since the 15th century, Sant Jordi day is the Catalan equivalent of St Valentine’s Day. It is customary to give roses and books as gifts on this day, and not only couples make gifts – everyone can receive a pleasant present.

Until recent times books were given only to men, roses – to women. But nowadays many young men accompany the book with a rose. The rose is traditionally red, but this has also gone through a few variations, so now you can meet many different colors.

Activities

On the 23rd of April, many activities are organized, as for adults as for children. Reading the books by their authors at bookstalls, giving autographs by famous authors, cooking the special dish called Pa de Sant Jordi just on the streets, and romantic vibe everywhere – no one will be left indifferent.

The flower and bookstalls are mostly concentrated in La Rambla, although you’ll also find them on the paseo de Grácia, making those two locations and the nearby plazas a required visit when you’re celebrating Sant Jordi’s day. One more place to visit on Sant Jordi Day is Montblanc. This well-preserved medieval heritage makes you feel as though you’re stepping back in time. Moreover, you’ll be able to see a performance showing Sant Jordi giving a rose to the Princess, which includes a lively medieval dance show, and soldiers strolling on the streets.
