This was established and further jointly expanded by a Spanish Consortium and Anheuser-Busch (BEC-Busch Entertainment Corporation) where the Tussauds group took over the Spanish partners as investors as some of them left, therefore they fully developed the place and became the first operators.

However in 1997 most of the shares in the park was brought by universal where the park was rebranded as ‘universal PortAventura’ and further on in 2000 an extra two hotels and a water park ( Costa Caribe) was also constructed and this was further re branded to a ‘Universal Mediterranea’.

Moreover in 2004, the universals studio parent sold all the Interest over to PortAventura which is currently owned by the banking company La Caixa and in 2005 the universal name was dropped from the branding and the resort was back to its own name, PortAventura.

The five areas of the park are based on the historic civilization, and the last one Sesame Street was opened purely for the 2011 season of the park.
