Alternative Museums in Barcelona
If you’re looking for something a bit out of the ordinary in Barcelona, why not check out the alternative museums in Barcelona! You can still learn something whilst having a much more interactive experience than at a regular museum.
#1 Museu de la Xocolata (Chocolate Museum)
The Chocolate Museum is a great family day out! The museum is only one section of the exhibition, there also many different activities to get involved in. They have the activities separated into age groups (including “post-compulsory education”) to ease the selection process. It is recommended to book in advanced online to avoid activities reaching maximum capacity. As a museum, it does of course take you through the history and origins of chocolate. Tourists love to visit the museum as it is much more interactive than a regular art or history museum. It is also a popular place to buy gifts for family and friends.

#2 Erotic Museum
The Erotic Museum is evidently not recommended for a family day out, you must be 18 or older to enter. However, it is a museum that is more than just a good laugh. It is definitely an experience that puts some people out of their comfort zone. The exhibit is full of history and culture as well! It looks into the origins of eroticism and the path it has taken to the present day, through different cultures in all corners of the world. More recently it has had a focus on art, as it has acquired two Picasso pieces. All in all, it comes highly recommended by visitors.

#3 Perfume Museum
The Perfume Museum is probably the least interactive out of these five alternative museums in Barcelona. However, it is still worth a visit! It showcases the transformation of perfume bottles throughout history, with over 5,000 bottles on display. The exhibit is split into the Ancient History Collection, the Pre-Commercial Collection, and the Commercial Collection. The museum includes the perfumes of some extremely well-known names, for example, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, Gabrielle Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and many more. Definitely a great place to visit if you’re looking for a nice stroll around a beautiful museum.

#4 Hash, Marihuana & Hemp Museum
The Hash, Marihuana & Hemp Museum is one of two in the world (the other located in Amsterdam). They were founded by Ben Dronkers and Ed Rosenthall with the aim of informing the public of the numerous uses of cannabis. The Cannabis Palace branch of the museum in Barcelona opened for the first time in May 2012. It is an exhibition where you can find information on the history of cannabis in addition to functioning as a centre for scientific research on the plant. Given that cannabis is only legal in a few countries, this has proven to be a very popular exhibition amongst tourists. Located in the Gothic Quarter, it is a very central museum to visit!

#5 El Rei de la Màgica (Magic Museum)
El Rei de la Màgica claims to be the world’s oldest magic shop/museum (opening in 1881). Located in the El Born neighbourhood, not only is it a museum, but it also offers magic shows, workshops and is a magic shop. There is a whole section dedicated to women in magic. It is great to see a strong emphasis on women in this industry, which will hopefully inspire many women and young girls.
