5 Spanish Winter Dishes

When you think of Spanish cuisine, the first thing that comes to mind is Tapas. However, in the colder winer months they don’t shy away from the warm, heartier meals. We have selected five of the most popular Spanish winter dishes from all over Spain. The most frequently used ingredients in Spanish cooking are meat, white beans and vegetables. All of which you can easily find in any local grocery store. Take a look at the recipes below and try your hand at these Spanish favourites.

1. Caldo Gallego

A traditional broth style soup from Galicia in the north of Spain. Referred to simply as Caldo in Galician, but as Caldo Gallego in Spanish. You don’t want to get Caldo Gallego mixed up with plain Spanish Caldo. A Standard Spanish Caldo soup is far less exciting. This Caldo Gallego is packed with potatoes, white beans, pork and cabbage/other greens. A go-to Spanish favourite for the slightly colder winter months.

2.Fabada

A meat and bean stew originating from the Asturias, another Northern region of Spain. This stew is made with Fabes de la Granja (white beans), shoulder of pork, pancetta or bacon, chorizo, sweet paprika and seasoning. You can often find the beans, pork and chorizo sold all together in one tin from the grocery store. This dish is extremely popular in Spain, as it is such a quick and easy dish to whip up!

3. Cocido Madrileño

This is one of Madrid‘s most famous winter meals. A Chickpea based stew made with potatoes, vegetables and meat (pork belly, chorizo, cured Serrano ham, beef and chicken). It’s actually quite hard to find in restaurants in the warmer summer months, as it is such a wintery dish. A popular way to serve this dish is in two courses. First the broth – almost as a stater, then second the potatoes, chickpeas, vegetables and meat. A slightly longer cooking time, but definitely still worth a try this winter!

4. Arroz con Bogavante

A dish originating from the Spanish coastal towns. At first glance this may just look like paella, but it’s much more of a soupy dish. Rinlo town in Ribadeo has one of the most famous lobster with rice recipes, at a restaurant called ‘A Cofradía de Rinlo’. It comes highly recommended by many Spaniards, if you are traveling anytime soon it is a spot you cannot miss! The main ingredients of this dish are bomba ricelobster, and tomatoes.

5. Churros con Chocolate

We all know it wouldn’t be winter in Spain without Churros con Chocolate! In Spain, churros are traditionally eaten for breakfast and dipped in a mug of melted chocolate, dulce de leche or café con leche. The origin of churros is unknown, as Spain, Portugal and the Philippines all claim to have created them. They are seen as an iconic Spanish dish nonetheless. Why not bring Spain home and cook them this winter for your family and friends!
