Gran Teatre Del Liceu: Barcelona’s iconic Opera house

Come and visit Barcelona’s historic focal point in the aspect of arts, social and political movements: the Gran Teatre Del Liceu. This spectacular theatre has been an important landmark in Barcelona for many decades. With its history and hidden secrets, it is definitely a must-visit spot in the city!

This historical monument used to be a convent and theatre, however, its structure today is not the same as it used to be in the past. It’s history has a lot of good and bad events happening, as well as a lot of mysteries, though this is what makes this culturally-rich landmark so interesting.

During your visit in the Theatre, you will walk through many of the most representative ares in the building; one of them being the historic lobby in the style of an eclectic Catalan Renaixement. Afterwards, you will find the horse shoe-shaped auditorium that, though it is not the original form, it’s the exact replica of what the architect Miquel Garriga I Roca designed in 1847. You will then find near the auditorium the Hall of Mirrors, an elegantly imposing room with the ceiling displaying allegorical paintings and writings referring to art and music. You might also stumble upon the new foyer, which is an area where people used to relax during the interval and is now is currently used as a multi-purpose room, hosting small-scale performances.

To get a taste of the Catalan and Spanish art nouveau, we recommend you to also visit the Cercle del Liceu, a private club that showcases great masterpieces homegrown in Catalonia.
