The History of Barcelona’s Modernism
Come and discover the Barcelona’s history of modernism that, for decades has told visitors the story of Catalonia and its artistic development to modern time. This museum is newer than the other galleries in Barcelona. Once a former textile factory, this museum of modernism offers to its visitors the opportunity to explore the site and discover the arts resided, rich with the Catalonian culture and history.
Opened in 2010, the new museum of modernism in Barcelona hosts a private collection of items, originated and homegrown in Barcelona. The museum firstly possessed the private collection of two antique dealers, Fernando Pinós and María Guirao and, now, it is currently hosting many pieces of modernism that are originated and designed in Catalonia. Each item would have a bond or meaning to Catalonia’s art-nouveau movement and modernism and, therefore, deserve to be displayed in this museum; helping to bring the story of this Spanish community back to life. The displayed collection consists of 350 art pieces, coming from different art disciplines such as painting, sculpture, furniture and decorative arts. These masterpieces were designed and created by 42 of the most important Catalonian artists and representatives of modern art; such as Joan Busquests, Antoni Gaudí, Josep Llimona, Gaspar Homar and many more; all in their different disciplines.
The building where the museum is resided was designed by the architect Enric Sagnier. The building shows the public from the very beginning what Barcelona’s modernism is all about. Before housing the museum, the city made sure to restore all the vaults and the flooring to its original state as part of the refurbishment project. With a floor space of 1,002m2, there is so much to find in this modern museum.
