CASA AMATLLER
The Casa Amatller is located in the center of the Catalan capital. Designed by the architect Puig i Cadafalch, together with Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and Domènech i Montaner’s Casa Lleó Morera, it is part of the famous “Manzana de la Discordia” or “Block of Discord.” Thanks to this experience you can relive the atmosphere of Barcelona’s affluent.
The chocolate manufacturer Antoni Amatller bought a property at 101 in Passeig de Gràcia: a house with a ground floor and four upper floors with a garden. Amatller commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch to refurbish the property, that’s how the story of one of the city’s most iconic buildings began.
The architect’s intervention brought a radical transformation to the building. Puig i Cadafalch skilfully combined Catalonia’s home-grown with the art nouveau and modernism style, he based his project on the use of traditional and craft arts, with a neo-Gothic style and an unusual stepped cornice that takes inspiration from the Netherland’s house style. Some of the finest artists of that time, including Jujol, worked with Puig i Cadafalch on the project.
The house maintains all its original furnishings and decoration, as well as an outstanding archaeological glass collection. Antoni Amatller can be considered one of the most famous chocolatiers of all the time; his chocolates are still being made today. At the end of the tour, you will be surprised with an exclusive tasting of thick hot chocolate with bread in the hall of the Casa Amatller.
