The “ Copa del Rey ” (or, in English: “King’s Cup”) is an annual football competition for Spanish football teams. The full name of the competition is “Campeonato de España – Copa de Su Majestad el Rey” (or, in English: “Championship of Spain – Cup of His Majesty the King”). But most Spanish football fans simply call it “La Copa”.
About the Copa del Rey
The Copa del Rey was founded in 1903, making it the oldest Spanish football competition. The winner continues on to the UEFA EUROPA League, unless they are qualified for the UEFA Champions League. FC Barcelona is the current holder of the cup, since they won their 27th Copa del Rey against Athletic Bilbao at the 2015 Copa del Rey Final held at the Camp Nou.
Currently, only 20 teams of the “Primera Division”, 21 teams from “Segunda A”, 24 teams from “Segunda B” and 18 champions from the “Tercera Division” can engage them in competition. The first three rounds are played on the ground of the team playing in the smallest division and on one sleeve. The second round saw the entrance of the club “Segunda División,” while Primera División clubs are within the competition from 32 finals.
