Carnival or Carnestoltes takes its origin from the Christian religion and fall 40 days before Easter Sunday. It symbolizes the beginning of Lent (40 days period where Christian abstain from their vices). In fact, traditionally, the Carnival is the last opportunity to enjoy everything before fasting, that’s why you can find local fat food like coca de llardons or butifarra de hueves. It’s also a good reason to party. The Carnival starts during Jueves Ladero (23/02) and ends next Wednesday with a special ceremony, sardines are burying to symbolize the beginning of Lent.
Due to its past, since 1980, it’s very important for Catalan people to party during Carnestoltes, because as Franco was in power, parties were prohibited.
