Christmas time in Barcelona is a truly special time and there are plenty of festive things to see and do. The Spanish celebrate Christmas as the lead up to the 6th January, which is the Three Kings Day. Around late November, the festivities begin with the switching on of the Christmas lights by the Mayor of Barcelona. They span a total distance of 85km bathing the city in a golden glow.
The city also holds many Christmas markets, the most famous of which is called ‘La Fira de Santa Llúcia’, which takes place in the gothic area of the city. The earliest recorded Christmas market in this area took place in 1786, making 2016 the 230th anniversary of the tradition. The majority of the stalls sell the ‘figuritas de Belén’ which are the figures you can buy to make your own Chirstmas manger called ‘Pessebres’ in Catalan. Christmas decorations and small gifts can also be purchased.
The weather is mostly moderate with temperatures occasionally dropping below 10c. Although it is unlikely to snow, the evenings can become quite chilly so it is recommended to bring a lightweight coat. If you’re coming to Barcelona to enjoy the festivities, we offer accommodation all over the city.
