FC Barcelona’s annual friendly football competition is held at the famous Camp Nou stadium in August, just before the start of FC Barcelonas La Liga season. This is a great opportunity to se the new signings before FC Barcelona’s La Liga season begins. It is also a great opportunity to see Camp Nou, the largest stadium in Europe.
The competition Trofeu Joan Gamper is named after Joan Gumper, a founding member, player and later president of the club. The first competition was played in 1966, FC Barcelona where then joined by Belgium’s R.S.C. Anderlecht, France’s FC Nantes, and Germany’s FC Köln. FC Barcelona won the competition when they beat FC Köln 3-1 in the final. Nowadays the tournament is shortened and played by FC Barcelona and one other team. This year FC Barcelona plays against the Brazilian team Chapecoense AF. The match will be held as a tribute to those killed in the tragic plane crash the 28th of November when Chapecoense where on the way to play the final of the Copa Sudamericana in Colombia.
The famous Camp Nou stadium with a section capacity of 99,354 makes it the largest in Europe and the second largest in the world in terms of capacity. It has hosted a lot of big games, such as European Cup/Champions League finals 1989 and 1999, five matches including the opening game of the 1982 FIFA World Cup and the football competition final at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
