calafell

Calafell is a municipality located on the Costa Dorada, characterized by a fantastic climate and 300 days of sunshine per year. The tourism industry has been blossoming in the city for nearly half a century. The municipality is known for its Vilamar colonies and the old Sanitarium San Juan de Dios. It is also recognized as the first European metropolis with a garden city model (Segur de Calafell).

It was recognized as a tourist town of the province of Tarragona in 2008. Calafell maintains an important tradition of sailors and fishing, which can be seen as reflected in its cuisine. The products of Calafell are often granted the designations of origin of Penedès (for sparkling wine) and Siurana (for oil). Calafell also belongs to the "Xató Route", which is formed by a string of towns that are known for preparing a typical Catalan sauce made of nuts, breadcrumbs, vinegar, garlic, oil and pepper. The sauce is often served with salted cod. Several different activities are organized per year in order to promote the local quality products.
