Palafrugell – Costa Brava

The beautiful town of Palafrugell in Costa Brava is on the coast of Catalunya; approximately 55km from LLORET DE MAR. With its pastel-colored traditional Spanish buildings layered on top of one another up the coastline, this town has a lot to offer to the tourists visiting it every year. History of Palafrugell

Moreover, it was the cork industry that first allowed this town to become well known; and that helped the Catalan vineyards by producing corks for them. Palafrugell is especially famous for producing Cava corks. While the last cork factory closed in the 1970’s but you are still able to feel the trace of cork production and learn all about it at the museums.

In addition, this town has many fascinating archaeological ruins around 30km away that are worth a visit. The ruins of Empúries are absolutely gorgeous, with a wonderfully peaceful and preserved setting. Overlooking the sea, these ruins have over 2,500 years of history that you shouldn’t miss!

The location of this costal town is truly magnificent. With an array of breathtaking beaches alongside traditional Spanish buildings, it really is a sight you will surely remember.

What to do in Palafrugell

There are several small reefs along the coast of Palafrugell, which have split this section of the Costa Brava into 7 beautiful sandy beaches. You can do a wide range of activities on the beaches, from renting kayaks, to attending sailing school, to scuba diving! Here are a few:

Beaches

  • A short walk around from the main beach we have these 3 small beaches: Port de Malaespina, Port Bo and Platja d’en Calau; which are all next to each other; with rocky splits that protrude out of the sea. The culture of the nearby fishing villages is very notable here, as there are little fishing boats scattered all along the beach.

  • Torre de Calella stands against the coast and was once used for defense during the Spanish Civil War. Worth a visit to see a magnificent view from the top!

Botanic Gardens

  • Cap Roig Botanical Gardens alongside the castle is a must-do! The gardens make their way down to the sea through a networking overlapping terraces. In July this is the venue for a very popular music festival.

Scuba Diving

  • Scuba Diving is a very popular activity in Palafrugell, which is a great location due to the multiple reefs and marine life nearby. A popular company is Dive Calella. If you are an experienced diver or want to try it for the first time, this is a good place to start.

Walking around Palafrugell

  • There are many walking routes you can do around Palafrugell. This website gives you a variety of walks from 1 mile up to 10 miles around Palafrugell.

How to get there

By bus: You have to take the bus at Estación Norte, Barcelona. It takes approximately 2 hours to reach it.

By car: If you are driving remember there are tolls on the road! Have some spare change and also a lot of them take cards now! The route is straightforward following signs:

  • Get on B-10 from Via Laietana, Plaça de Pau Vila, Carrer del Dr. Aiguader and Exit 22
  • Take C-33, AP-7, C-35 and C-31 to Avinguda de Catalunya in Mont-ras. Take exit 331 from C-31
  • Continue on Avinguda de Catalunya. take Avinguda de Palafrugell, Av. de la Generalitat and Carrer de Torres i Jonama to Carrer dels Valls in Palafrugell
