History and origins of the market
Opened in 1848, the Santa Caterina market was above all the first all-cover market in Barcelona. Moreover, It has recently receive a complete renovation with a modern look but in keeping with a traditional Catalan market. The design of this brightly coloured undulating roof was by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. This extraordinary new roof consists of 325,000 ceramic pieces of over 60 colours representing the colours of the fruit and vegetables sold inside, for instance.
The market between 1997 and 2004 underwent a comprehensive reform, projected by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. One of the major modifications that was affected by this reform was the new colored roof, inspired by Gaudí’s “trencadís”. In the same vein of the course of the works and constructions, various archaeological remains of the old convent got discover. Subsequently these remains can be seen in the basement of the market, as part of the Barcelona History Museum (MUHBA).
