Boqueria Market – Culinary Delights

The Boqueria Market

No VISIT TO BARCELONA is complete without visiting the incredibly spectacular Boqueria Market on LA RAMBLA with its numerous stalls bursting with foods of every kind and from every part of the world!

Most importantly, it is best to visit in the morning; to catch the best products and to miss the hoards of tourists. However it can get extremely busy, especially on Saturdays! But it is worth it to experience the lively atmosphere of the crowds milling through the fantastically colourful displays of culinary delights and fresh products. Moreover, just try not to get too distracted by the food and bump into the locals or tourists as you wander through.

Origins of the Boqueria Market

The origins of the market began in the year 1200, when pig sellers would gather in the same spot. During this period it was set outside of the city walls as there was no room for a pig market of that size. However in 1840, a permanent market was set up in the site of the former St. Joseph’s Convent. The Boqueria market has continued to grow ever since and has sustained itself over the centuries to become the largest market in Europe incorporating products of every kind!

A few years ago in 2003, the Boqueria Food School was set up where you can attend a class or workshop about food preperation, produce and cooking techniques. Perfect for the amateur chef or for those wanting to pick up a few tips in the kitchen. To check out the events you can visit the MARKET’S OFFICIAL WEBSITE.

Where to eat

The Boqueria market also has many tapas bars and behind the fish section you can find a wood fired oven where you can buy cheap yet delicious pizza by the slice. You can find foods from across the globe to tantalise your senses with the many flavours and aromas including Latin American pastries, Italian delicacies, Greek olives, fruit smoothies, freshly baked bread and much more. In addition, here’s some of the best spots to come by and enjoy the flavors of the market:

# 1 El Pinotxo Bar

“60 years of history and tradition behind the bar” is the best phrase of El Pinotxo. Market cuisine, quality, and above all an authentic environment founded by Joan Bayén. Likewise, come and try its best dishes such as chickpeas with blood sausage, potato stew or squid with beans.
