MACBA mia!

MACBA mia! Certainly, the city of Barcelona is considered to be one of the best European capitals for contemporary art. Even if you are not looking for anything in particular, you can always find out works of famous street artists and performers on the streets, for instance. But also, there is one place impossible to avoid if you are further looking for the concentration of modern culture in Barcelona. Of course, this place is the museum of contemporary art MACBA.

MACBA was founded in 1995 opening the doors for the visitors in the heart of Barcelona’s old centre. The building of the museum is totally new, designed by a North American architect Richard Meier. Now MACBA is rightly considered to be the concentration of works and exhibitions of world known artists. Moreover, this museum aims to incorporate art innovations and involve society in the exciting process of creating contemporary culture.

The main MACBA building

First, the American architect Richard Meier designed this museum. In the same vein, the design by this architect tends to unite the contemporary art exhibited inside, with the historical forms of the surrounding buildings. Also, the entrance to the MACBA gives access to a reception hall: a circular space marked by a strong verticality; from which, by means of access ramps and a distribution to the exhibition rooms. Indeed, the use of white is further complemented by the use of large glass walls and reflective materials, and makes it a building of particular luminosity. The construction went from 1987 to 1995, and finally the MACBA opened its doors on November 28, 1995.

The skate park

Plaça dels Àngels, a square where the MACBA is situated in, is also a famous spot for skaters. A wide space of the plaza and its smooth surface attracts fans of skateboarding from all over the world. Apart of riders you can meet there a plenty of young people sitting around and drinking sodas.
