What to do in Lloret de Mar?
Lloret de Mar is a Mediterranean coastal town in Catalonia, Spain. It is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Costa Brava. As it is located just 40 kilometers from Girona and 75 kilometers from Barcelona, it’s also a very popular place for a day-trip from these larger cities. The city has a population of nearly 40,000 inhabitants spread through its 48,9km², and attracts many summer visitors from all over the world.
History of Lloret de Mar
The city has many archeological sites with remains from the Iberian (Greek and Roman) civilizations. However, as many coastal cities in the Mediterranean region, Lloret de Mar was frequently invaded during the Middle Ages by the Saracens. The harbour of Lloret de Mar became one of the most commercial harbours of the Costa Brava during the 18th century, but it no longer exists as such now.
It is, however, still very easy to come across historical sites from this time. Such sites include the Church of Sant Romà, a Gothic Church built in 1522 as a refuge from Turkish and Algerian pirates, and the Castel of Sant Joan. This is a medieval castle from the 11th century used to defend Lloret de Mar against attacks from the sea. The Castle of Sant Joan was especially important in defending the area from attacks by the Genovese fleet in 1356 and also during England’s war in 1805.

More than 1.5 kilometers long, this is the largest beach of the town. Located in the city-center, it’s also perhaps the most convenient beach of the city because it has a parking area. This is our favourite beach in Lloret de Mar, located below the Castel of Lloret, from which you can enjoy a lovely view of this wonderful cove. The beach features soft white sand and pretty boats clustered along the shore. Here you will feel as if you are stranded in a natural, wild cove. No facilities are available at this beach, so take care of yourself! Bring your favourite book, your sunscreen and feel the wonderful natural vibes of Lloret de Mar.
#3 Finals Beach
This is the second largest beach of Lloret de Mar, over 700 meters long. It’s a fantastic beach, located in a bay sheltered from the winds by a hill. It is also a bit removed from the city-center of Lloret de Mar and thus more peaceful and less crowded. This beach also offers some activities, including parasailing, kayaking, waterskiing, restaurants and a mini club, as well as bathrooms with showers and gateways adapted for disabled people. The beach is guarded from 10a.m to 6p.m by the lifeguard. Similar to Lloret Beach, this is another perfect place for families and friends who want to enjoy the summertime.
