Hotel room prices in Barcelona doubled with the Mobile World Congress 2019 approaching
Hotels in Barcelona started to fill as the city has been preparing to host the 11th edition of the Mobile World Congress from the 25th to the 28th of February. A record number of 95,000 to 100,000 visitors is expected to attend. Barcelona’s hotels expect to reach full occupancy on the peak days. As a result, the price of hotel rooms has increased as the Mobile World Congress is approaching.
Hotel rates have nearly doubled for the event. Barcelona’s four and five-star hotels are returning to the usual price growth path of each year at the end of February. The reservations have increased by 4% and the average rate has escalated greatly. The average price for a room in four or five stars, which are categories preferred by MWC congressmen, has reached 800 Euros.
A review of the search portals confirms these increases. One of the most luxurious hotels in Barcelona offers rooms for 3,353 euros from the 25th to 28th February, 757% more expensive than the next week, which collapses to 391 euros. Intermediate category establishments quote their bedrooms at 530 euros, 446% more expensive than a week after. Within the apartments, the offer Airbnb apartments is 256% more expensive, and that of apart hotels grows to 336%.
In order to avoid higher hotel rates, some attendants have started to look for accommodation outside of Barcelona to stay for the MWC. According to statistics, Tarragona is showing a 22% availability of rooms during the dates of the event. In Badalona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, there is 16% and 12% availability of rooms in each respective city.
Last year marked a decline in the income of hotels in Barcelona. They had no choice but to lower their rates in order to maintain their occupational levels. This was mainly due to the political uncertainty derived from the independence process and the terrorist attack, but also because of the growing competition in the sector.
Although the income made in 2019 so far can’t equal to the one from 2017, it is getting closer and closer. All free hotel rooms are expected to be booked for the event.
