Sala Montjuïc open-air film festival

Sala Montjuïc is an open-air film festival during the summer in Barcelona. The festival this year runs from 3 July until 7 August. During these weeks you can see a selection of the best movies of all times, with concerts, picnics and short films. Sala Montjuïc is a project organised by Associació Cultural MODIband. This cultural association is established in 2003 to stage open-air auteur children’s film festivals. MODIband regularly works with other cultural institutions to create new audiences and discover the diversity of the cinematic world. They believe in culture as a source of personal and collective enrichment.

Montjuïc Castle

Sala is held in the hills of Montjuïc. Here you can find various beautiful parks and also a very pretty castle. The Montjuïc Castle is an old military fortress with roots dating back to 1640. During Sala you can book a guided tour of the Castle and after the tour you can watch a good movie. The tour takes you on a really unique visit to Montjuïc Castle to learn more about its history. You will also visit various viewpoints to see beautiful Barcelona from a different point of view. You can book a tour everyday that they are showing a movie. If you book the tour you also have access to the Sala afterwards. The tour start at 7 pm, takes around 60 minutes and will cost you €11,-. Do keep in mind that the tours are only given in Spanish.

Time and access

On the day of a movie you can enjoy a concert first. The concert starts around 8.45 pm and you can enter the venue at 8.30. After the concert the movie will start around 10 pm and the end time will depend on the movie. The full address of the venue is Fossat de Santa Eulàlia moat at Montjuïc Castle. You can reach the castle by foot, but from personal experience we don’t recommend it if you don’t want to be out of breath when the movie starts. Around the castle there are free parking areas if you want to go by car, motorbike or bicycle. Rather go with public transportation? Not a problem, there is a free shuttle bus you can take from Plaça d’Espanya. The buses are going up to the castle between 8.15 and 9.30 pm. And will go down after the end of the movie.

Because this is a popular festival we recommend you to buy your tickets in advance. If you do this the tickets will cost you €6,50 and this is just for access to the Sala. If you want to hire a lounger this will cost you €3,25 extra and to visit the castle is another €5,00 extra. Want some food and don’t want to bring your own? You can buy the eco-picnic for €11, we will explain this further later. Want to visit Sala regularly then maybe it is more interesting to buy a ticket for 3 or 5 screenings. This will save you some money. A ticket for 3 screenings will cost you €17,- and a ticket for 5 screenings is €22,-. For children under 12 years the admission is free. Once again make sure to get your tickets in advance because the capacity of the venue is limited.

Bar & Eco-picnic

What is a movie without good snacks? Well Sala has a very good option for delicious food for just €11,- (if you order in advance). All of the food is ecological, freshly-made and of course very tasty. You have multiple options when it comes to the food and drinks.

  • Burgers with sourdough bread. First option: Pulp fiction (100% beef + cheese and/or bacon) Second option: Mac Montjuïc (100% vegan) Last option: Reial (100% veggie with cheese).
  • Home-made pizza: Margherita Cherry, Kimcheese, Parmigiana and specials of the day.
  • Chips with your favourite sauce.
  • Spicy vegetable samosas with Thai sauce.
  • Hummus with turmeric and totopos.

For drinks you have the choices include soft drinks, water, Damm beer, fruit juice and wine (red, white and rosé). If you are on a budget you can also bring your own food and drinks. But believe us the food is delicious and definitely worth the €11.

What if it rains?

Barcelona is known for its hot summers but every once in a while it rains. Yes, even in Barcelona. But what happens to the movie if it starts to rain. If the organisers decide to suspend the session due to rain before opening time (8.30 pm), everyone who bought a ticket will be reimbursed. When it starts to rain during the movie the spectators can attend any other session, free of charge. Cancelled sessions will be announced on the Sala Montjuïc social networks. So, if you have the feeling that it can rain check their social media. Your movie cancelled? Don’t be sad there are a lot of things to do in Barcelona, even when it rains.

Other options

Don’t feel like going to the open-air film festival, which we do recommend, There are enough other options. Around the same time you have the Greek festival in Barcelona, maybe this is more your style. And if you still want to watch a movie but don’t want to leave the comfort of your own apartment here is a list of movies so that you can still get to know Barcelona.
