Fira de Santa Llúcia
During Christmas, and also the time leading up to it, there are many activities in Barcelona that will make you enjoy every second of it. The Christmas markets can be found anywhere in the city and are definitely a must during the Holiday season. One of these Christmas markets is the Fira de Santa Llúcia.
The Fira de Santa Llúcia can be found at Avinguda de la Catedral, right in front of the beautiful cathedral in the city center of Barcelona. This year the 233 anniversary is celebrated already, the first fair was in 1786! Back in the days, the market was organised to celebrate the feast day of Santa Llúcia on the 13th of December. However, at this moment it is developed into a big Christmas market that runs for 3 weeks! Originally the products that were sold were mangers and figurines that were made of clay and paper. During the 19th century the market changed a lot, also stands with dolls and other items for children were added. The Fira de Santa Llúcia will ‘open its doors’ at the 29th of November and will close them again at the 23rd of December, the day before Christmas kicks off!
The Fira de Santa Llúcia is a very nice Christmas market to go to during the time leading up to Christmas. The fair has different sections namely and just got a complete new layout this year! The different parts of the fair consist of history, artisans, activities, news, the photographic archive, exhibitions of crib scenes, courses and many more. This makes the market a fun activity that has sure something for everyone!
The Fira de Santa Llúcia has around 300 stalls that sell things specifically for Christmas, such as decorations, trees, nativity scenes, but also all sorts of gifts that are mainly hand made, such as jewellery, scarves, puppets and much more!
It is definitely recommended to visit the market once during the day and once at night. By doing this you will be able to enjoy the different atmospheres that all the stalls have during the different times of the day!
So, when are you planning to go?
