Nature in the heart of the park

Large spaces have been made to let people walk under the trees to feel like they are lost in nature, forgetting the rest of the city. Large paths surrounded by palm trees are everywhere in the park, giving it a tranquil atmosphere.The park is quite big and so you can easily take a long walk to unwind and relax. Fused with the urban fabric designed by Ildefons Cerdà, the Joan Miró park occupies the site of the old slaughterhouse in the city. This is equivalent to four blocks from L’Eixample. Here you can observe various plantations of pines, holm oaks and palm trees.

History of the park

This place is the first in which a new use was given to urban spaces with obsolete equipment. Birthing a new interactive space, the land that had once been  occupied as an old slaughterhouse, became a prime example of the new urban strategy initiated by democracy. In search of a new movement for the recovery of our city,  this park made progressive growth to create an extensive and quality-filled public space, making it an emblematic piece.

The most important sculpture: Dona I Ocell

Dedicated to Joan Miró, a statue finished in 1983 represented the genius of the artist. Located at the heart of the park, this ceramic mosaic sits at 22 meters high. The sculpture in called Dona I Ocell, or “The Woman and the Bird”.

At one end of the pond, in the large square located at the height of the streets of Tarragona and Aragó, this unique and beautiful sculpture towers over the large green space. It is composed with mostly trencadís; and it has become one of the parks greatest figure. Later, this piece was donated to Barcelona by its creator.

Abundance in sportive installations

At the corner of the park, some large sportive installations are free to use if you are feeling active during your stay. Full-size basketball courts are available as well as table tennis equipment.
