Santa Maria del Mar from the year 998. The plan to build the church was made in 1324 by order of Archbishop Bernard Yulya. Construction of the church began on March 25, 1329 when the first stone was gelerd by King Alfonso IV of Aragon. All guilds of La Ribera were during the construction involved in this mammoth task. In 1350, all the walls, the side chapels and the facades finished. However, in 1379 there was a large fire which damaged many important elements. On 3 November 1383 the last stone was laid and the church was consecrated on 15 August 1384. In the year 1428 an earthquake destroyed some windows on the west side of the church. During a fire in the chapel in 1936, some images and the altar destroyed.
The facade of Santa Maria del Mar gives the impression that it is a huge and heavy building. In contrast to this it feels very different if you are in the building. It is difficult to see the church full as there are around the church countless narrow streets. Only from the square of Santa Maria you can see the church really good.
It is surprising that, when you walk into the church, feeling that it is a large, massive building was completely disappears. Inside you can see that there is plenty of space and light, which is partly caused by the high windows. There are virtually no images in the church.
