Barcelona Christmas Markets

While you can expect up to 15 degrees Celcius during Christmas, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be magical without any chance of snow. The Catalans here love to go to a Christmas market or as they call it a Fira de Nadal. It’s the best place to go for your Christmas shopping because there are many artisanal gifts to be found that are just a little more special than another gift. Make sure to look for the Tió, the wooden logs with a hat, a painted face and 2 front legs. It’s part of the Catalan tradition to give one to your kids and then they have to take care of it. The fatter the log turns and the better the kids care for it, the more presents they’ll receive on Christmas. It is also a nice reminder of your time here.

Fira de Santa Llúcia

This market is the most important one as it the oldest and the largest. The Fira de Santa Llúcia has been organised since 1786 and nowadays there are more than 300 booths. These booths sell anything from Christmas related decoration to artisanal gifts. You can already visit this Fira as it is always set up the end of November until the 23rd of December. This market is located in front of the Cathedral which is located in the Gothic district. If you’re interested in the origin of the market or you’d like more information, make sure to check out our post here.

Opening hours:

Open between the 29th of November until the 23rd of December

From Monday to Friday: 11 am – 8.30 pm

From Saturday to Sunday: 10 am – 9.30 pm

Fira de Nadal de la Sagrada Família

During the same time as the Fira de Santa Llucia, there is also a market next to the Sagrada Familia. The famous basilisk and the park next to it are the perfect location for another Fira de Nadal. It is a smaller market than the one next to the Cathedral, but there is a completely different atmosphere here that is worth visiting it. This market is a bit more focused on the gift-giving booths as you’ll also find clothes and jewellery or the typical Christmas treats. This market has been organized from the moment the market in front of the Cathedral got too big and they required a second location to put up all these booths.

Opening hours:

Open between the 29th of November until the 23rd of December

From Monday to Friday: 10 am – 9 am

From Saturday to Sunday: 10 am – 10 pm

Fira de Port Vell

New this year is the market in the old harbour Port Vell. It’s a new location this year where another Christmas market is organised. Not only is the location special, there is also a floating nativity scene and a gigantic Christmas tree. Next to the market and the wonderful floating nativity scene, you’ll also find a ferris wheel and other fun activities to do that are perfect for a family day out! The mall Maremugnum is open all year, so you can go shopping as well while you’re there. Or if you’re more into aquatic animals, you can also visit the aquarium that is next to the mall.

Opening hours:

Between the 5th of December and the 5th of January, but closed on the first of January

From the 9th of December until the 12th and from the 16th of December until the 19th and for the 25th of December the following hours apply: 6 pm – 10 pm

Fira de Nadal de Poble Espanyol

Poble Espanyol is a small, authentic village that is based on the original houses people used to live in. It’s located on the Montjuic hill and is actually an outdoors museum. There are a lot of shops as well, so it won’t feel like a museum, you’ll just feel like you’re thrown back into time. It’s especially fun during the holidays as they decorate the village in a Christmas theme. During the whole month of December, you’ll enter a winter wonderland. There will be 2 periods of time during which they also organise fun activities for adults and kids. Before Chirstmas day has arrived, kids can give their list of presents they’d like to receive to Santa, older kids can drop of their Tió and for the adults there are various tastings of wine, beer and local products. There is also a skating track, live music and new this year is the Euphoria show where a lot of artists will perform a magnificent show.

Opening hours: During the periods when the market is organised, Poble Espanyol will be open from 10 am until 8 am, these periods are from the 6th of December until the 8th and from the 21st of December until the 29th.
