Barcelona hosts so many exciting events that it is almost impossible to single some out! We’ve tried putting together a list of some of the biggest here:
For the musically interested Barcelonas hosts the 2 huge music festivals Sónar and Primavera sound.
Primavera sound takes places in late May or early June each year and has an attendance rate of more than 100.000 during its three running days. The range of musical genres at Primavera sound includes alternative, indie, electronic, pop, hip hop, dance, folk, jazz, metal, and experimental music. It was recently announced that this years edition will be held from the 22nd to the 26th of May.
Sónar is another large annual music festival in Barcelona with only electronic music. Sónar has some 80.000 attendees during it’s three days. It is split into two parts, a day part that takes place in the middle of Barcelona and a night part that takes place at a large 10.000 sqm field just outside of Barcelona city. This years edition will be held in the middle of June, on the 13th to the 15th.
Barcelona is a great city for gays and lesbians because of the open minded and diverse nature of the city. Barcelonas gay community is thriving and naturally Barcelona is home to one of Europes proudest and most fabolous gay festivals, Pride Barcelona. in 2013 the Pride Barcelona festival will run from the 21st to the 30th of June, and during this period Barcelona will be the gay capital of the world with an enormous amount of events, fairs and festivals, as well as activities for both gay and heterosexuals alike, like the running race against homophobia on the mountain of Montjuic.
Mobile World Congress
Barcelona is a large business hub and therefore also home to many businesses and technology expositions, conventions and fairs, the largest and most famous problably being the Mobile World Congress in the Fira de Barcelona convention center. This years edition will be held from the 25-28 of February, and has been moved to the Fira Gran Via for the first time. Last year edition saw more than 67.000 visitors and this makes the Mobile World Congress the largest of its kind.
If you are a race head then the Formula 1 Catalunya is the event for you. The Gran Premio de España de Formula One is the fifth race on the 2013 FIA Formula One World Championship Race Calender. The racetrack where this race takes place is the Circuit de Catalunya, in the town of Montmeló just north of Barcelona. The Circuit de Catalunya also hosts a number of other races and events, including the V de V Michelin Endurance Series races, CEV Spanish Road Racing Championship, Catalan Car Racing Championships and much more. Whether your a seasoned race head or you’ve never been to a race before, a trip to the biggest motorsporting event in the world, the Formula One, is a great experience that you shouldn’t miss out on! This years edition will be on the 12th of May, with practice and qualifying races on the 10th and 11th of May.
Salón Internacional del Automóvil
Another event real motorheads simply can not miss is the Salón Internacional del Automóvil car expo. This event only come by every two years so don’t miss out on this chance to go to the 2013 edition! The expo is, as most other Barcelona expos, held in the Fira de Barcelona expo center at the foot of the Montjuic mountain by Plaça Espanya. The Salón Internacional del Automóvil is the oldest motor show in Spain with over 90 years of history, and it is the only Spanish car expo that is officially recognized by the “Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs Automóviles” (OICA).
The 2009 edition saw more than one million visitors during its 9 nine days!
Although a traditional motor expo, Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Barcelona does differ a bit due to the large focus on electric cars, renewable energi and vehicle charging infrastructure. This years edition will be in the middle of May, from the 11th to the 19th.
Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell
One of the biggest sporting events of the year is the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell tennis tournament, which is played at the Real Club Tenis de Barcelona-1899, the oldest tennis club in Spain. The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is a part of the ATP World Tour 500 clay court tour. The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is a real “home ground”, as Spaniards have won the last 10 editions with Rafael Nadal winning 7 of the last 8 editions.
The tournament celebrated it’s 60th anniversary in 2012, and is widely regarded as the most important and prestigious tennis event in Spain.
This year the tournament will take place from the 22nd to the 28th of April.
One of the undoubtable biggest events of the year in the Barcelona event calender is the La Mercè. La Mercè is the annual “Festa Major” of Barcelona, in honour of the city’s patron saint La Mare de Déu de la Mercè, Catalan for “Our Lady of Mercy”. The feast day on the 24th of September has been a national holiday since 1871, but it wasn’t until 1902 many of the traditions that this festival is known for, were introduced. These includes the “gegants i capgrossos”, huge paper maché giants, a castell “human tower” competition, the sardana dance and more.
One of the festival highlights is the correfoc where a group of people will dress up as devils and light fireworks while dancing to a traditional drum beats, in the middel of large crowds of spectators.
This year the festival of La Mercè will run from the 16th to the 30th of September.
