Il Trovatore (Italian for “The Troubadour”) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, based on the play El Trovador in 1836 by Antonia García.

The story is situated in Saragossa, Spain and goes about Manrico, a troubadour, and Leonora who are in love. But the Count named Luna also likes Leonora. In the past the mother of Manrico, Azucena, kidnapped his younger brother. Out of revenge, the count tortures Azucena until Manrico tried to rescue her but got captured too.  Then Leonora offers the count to marry him in order to let them go but commits suicide afterwards. At the end Luna kills Manrico and Azucena who is also about to die, reveals that Manrico is Luna’s long-lost brother.

Il trovatore returned after its last performance in 2009 and has already been performed 275 times at Liceu. The opera is sung by beautiful voices, in a new version by Joan Anton Rechi, and with timeless decors created by William Orlandi.
